I prefer to use drawings and collages to create some simple patterns to express myself. In this work, to obtain a new visual effect, I decided to use three-dimensional way to present two-dimensional patterns. This time, I made the picture book for 2-4-year old children. Instead of text, I used paintings to express the whole story. I think the pop-up book is a form increasing the interaction between the writer and the readers. And it seems like a game; it makes the work more suitable for children to read.
After the investigation of the other picture books and stereo books, I chose cows, chameleons and zebras as three major animals of this series. The name of my project is HIDE because the three main images are hidden in the repeated patterns. I used two kinds of three-dimensional structures. One is superposition, which reveals the animals at the last page. In this way, readers will have fun. In addition, it makes the pattern more complex. The second structure is pulling out. In this way, the animals change their colors gradually, just like chameleon. That’s the reason I think chameleon should be presented in this way. In order to improve the effect of the exhibition, I decided to do this series in the print form again. Therefore, I used digital printing and laser engraving. I also introduced a series of related peripheral products, such as bookmarks, bags and postcards, etc. They are made for readers to collect and also easy to carry.
简单图形的排列组合是我比较倾向的创作方式,我希望延续这种创作方式与此同时有所突破,我尝试用三维的表现形式来呈现二维的图形,来获得一种新的视觉体验。立体书是一种很好的载体来呈现这一想法。在创作初期,我将作品的受众人群定位于低幼儿童,所以我摒弃了文字,转而用绘画来表达整个故事,而立体书又可以增加读者与作者间的互动,具有一定的游戏感,使这套作品更加适合儿童阅读。
作品《HIDE》是有关于动物如何用自身的花纹来隐藏自己。基于最初的想法,我搜集了大量绘本以及立体书资料来激发我的灵感。为了能更好的诠释“隐藏”,我选择了两种立体方式。叠加的方式,增添了书籍的趣味感,距离感,使简单的花纹有了些复杂性变化,抽拉的方式有浮现与神秘的感觉,通过这两种方式将读者带入我的故事情节中。同时,我推出了系列相关周边产品,如书签,布袋和明信片等,供读者收藏和携带。
